English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language Department at California Preparatory College offers a variety of methods of learning for those who desire to become proficient in reading, writing and speaking in the English Language.

English is a West Germanic Language originated in Anglo-Saxon England. It is the official language in 53 countries and is the preferred language of many international organizations. The English Language is spoken by between 500 million and 1.8 billion people around the world and is widely recognized as the language of the business world.

At CPC, students will begin our ESL program at the appropriate tested level of English proficiency - beginning, intermediate, or advanced. Our teaching methods include mandatory class lectures (with a minimum of 12 credit hours per week, which is necessary to satisfy F-1 visa requirement). Students also have the option to take as many as 5-8 additional credit hours for a total of 17-20 classroom hours per week. Other optional activities such as the ‘buddy system‘ (up to 3 additional hours per week of working with a native English speaker) is a great way to enhance your skills. Students are also required to arrange several hours per week of English lab experience in our ESL Language lab. The more students immerse themselves in the various optional learning techniques and activities, the more quickly their English skills will improve. As ESL students become more proficient in their understanding and usage of the English language, CPC offers Associate Degrees in the areas of Business and Health Science. WHPC Certificate are also available for students who desire to pursue higher educational goals. Learning techniques consist of the following:
