English as Second Language (ESL)

California Preparatory College – Empowering Global Communication Through Faith-Based, Holistic Education

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at California Preparatory College (CPC) is designed to equip non-native English speakers with the language proficiency and cultural fluency necessary to succeed academically, socially, and professionally in an English-speaking environment. Rooted in CPC’s faith-based and student-centered philosophy, the ESL program goes beyond traditional instruction to foster personal growth, community connection, and intercultural understanding.

Program Overview

  • The ESL program offers multi-level instruction, from beginner to advanced, ensuring that students receive targeted support at every stage of their language journey. The curriculum combines academic rigor with practical immersion, preparing students to communicate confidently and effectively in real-world settings.

    Instructional components include:

    • Core language lectures focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation

    • Language labs to reinforce listening and speaking through multimedia tools

    • Cultural immersion experiences, including off-campus activities and local engagement

    • The CPC Buddy System, pairing ESL students with native English-speaking students for conversational practice and peer support

Students are required to enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours, with the option to take an additional 5 to 8 credits. Weekend activities and field trips provide further exposure to English in social and practical contexts.

Instructional Methods

The program uses a variety of dynamic, student-centered learning techniques, including:

  • Interactive class lectures with real-time discussion and feedback

  • Computer-assisted language learning in CPC’s language labs

  • Small-group and one-on-one tutoring through the CPC Buddy System

  • Field-based learning through off-campus excursions (e.g., museums, community events)

  • Weekend cultural activities to enhance language use in informal settings

These methodologies foster not only academic language acquisition but also emotional confidence and cultural adaptability.

Program Learning Outcomes (ESL)

Upon successful completion of the ESL program, students will be able to:

  • Develop and demonstrate proficiency in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing for academic and everyday communication

  • Apply effective vocabulary strategies and reading techniques to enhance academic comprehension and independent study

  • Communicate using grammatically correct, fluent, and culturally appropriate English in a variety of formal and informal contexts

  • Strengthen personal study habits, critical thinking, and technology skills necessary for academic and workplace success
